Life on The Flats
EVENTS HOSTED BY RIVERCONNECT AND PARTNER AGENCIES
Life on The Flats
Join RiverConnect and Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation to experience a truly unique and memorable cultural walk on The Flats. Guided by an Elder, the talk will explore significant events and share personal stories of life growing up on the banks of the mighty Kaiela (Goulburn River).
Between the twin cities of Shepparton and Mooroopna, Kaiela (Goulburn River), infilled by the Broken River, flows downstream to meet Dhungalla (Murray River). For time immemorial, this is where the story begins for the people and clans of the Yorta Yorta Nation caring for Woka (Land), Walla (Water) and all its interconnected systems.
The Flats is a culturally and historically significant area on the floodplain in the Shepparton Regional Park between Shepparton and Mooroopna. This location was home to many Aboriginal families after the Cummeragunja Walk Off, the first ever mass strike of Aboriginal people in 1939.
We welcome you to immerse yourself in the stories of this area, engaging with what many who lived on The Flats remember as a hard, but happy time. This event offers a truly unique experience with an opportunity to connect directly with a Yorta Yorta Elder.
This event is included in the National Trust - Australian Heritage Festival 2023 program
